Took my car there to diagnose a rear drivetrain noise. It was either the rear wheel bearing(s) or the rear differential, and as a long time car guy I needed a professional opinion. That's all I asked for. Nothing more. It's an 8 year old NY car with pretty high miles, which as a car guy, I know is aging and bound to have a variety of systems that are not "as-new." When the "report" finally hit my phone in the waiting room, it was filled with shit I did not ask for. Dirty air filter, A/C blend door making noise, rust on rear brake calipers, oil leak pictures of body damage, scratches and dings, brake fluid analysis, bouncy suspension, wipers not functional (later corrected, noticing the key wasn't in the on position-duh). On a positive note, some of my systems actually looked good, like my automatic transmission fluid. Not sure how it was visually inspected, since there's no dip stick. All of this extra stuff I didn't ask for took time to evaluate and I paid for it. All I wanted to know is was the noise coming from the diff or the wheel bearings. It was the kind of crap that Jiffy Lube or Walmart does to customers (on steroids). I have no doubt of their acumen when it comes to transmission work, based on their on-line reputation, but overall, it was an embarrassing experience. Bottom line, they think it's the diff. A short test drive and fifteen minutes with a scope on the lift would have been adequate for the diagnosis. Feel a bit taken advantage of, unfortunately. Nice, clean, friendly shop. Chatted with a couple very interesting customers in the waiting room. Oh well.
